About the blogger

Profile picture

My name is Hailey and I admit I am a little behind the times because this is my first blog. I am even new at reading other blogs, but I’ve decided to take my first sail on the open sea of blogs and document this next season of my life in a blog. It will be a short season, so I am going to try to commit to to blogging thoroughly and often. If the blogging thing doesn’t work with me at least it is only a commitment until May 2008.

I am a Senior in college doing an internship on Capitol Hill for a semester. I went from being a student at Winthrop University in South Carolina to now living a few blocks from the Capitol. Studying and now being in politics I always try to use the fact that I am a student to cover my lack of political opinion or definition. I am someone who truly tries to listen before I speak and is always up for a respectful debate. I do not have a party affiliation (yet?) not because I am a wimp and have a problem with sticking myself to one side or another (that is a battle I have already fought), but because I cannot say I know enough to make a decision. I don’t know if even after this internship I will have declared my party affiliation. If anything this semester will present me with more frustration with trying to construct my political stance.

This is a good place to talk about my religious beliefs. When it comes to politics the one thing I do not stand for is a demonization of the “other” found in all levels of politics including national and foreign politics. I love the Lord and I know a theme repeated throughout the Bible is that the Lord judges the heart: “the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts” (1 Chor. 28:9). I believe He is the absolute truth, but I see most of the time in politics His truth is politicized and therefore I am not persuaded by religious rhetoric. This is why I am excited to get a first hand account in examining our representatives in DC.

In all, I am looking forward to the learning experience ahead of me. I may become appalled by it all and decide to learn how to garden and join an ecovillage, or maybe I will be inspired to be a part of the change in our public sector. I don’t have much to lose. The only thing I did have to sacrifice in coming to DC was being near to my wonderful boyfriend back in South Carolina, who I thank for prompting me to start this blog.
